Spring, summer, autumn or winter – no reason for you not to walk your socks off whichever the season, or just enjoy some short strolls.

Amsterdam leafy walks are best in spring, early summer, late summer and autumn.
High summer is really green but the city can be choc-a-bloc and although we steer you towards quiet areas, you may need to cross some hectic streets and squares.
Winter can be fantastic for walking but it's the bare trees rather than the leafiness that holds the charm.

For each season, we suggest various walks that both suit and enhance that particular time of year in Amsterdam.

• Spring

  

  Spring is in the air

  With all the trees and so many pavement gardens, there's a profusion bursting into spring green and splendid colour and plenty of sensations to put a spring in your step.

  The elms festooned in a haze of pale green seeds, cherry blossom, magnolia, forsythia, daffodils, tulips (of course) all play a blinder during the first warm sunny days.
  Later, clematis, wisteria, and laburnum, will accompany you towards early summer.

• Summer

  

  Summer in the city

  Summer is bliss, green and blossoming. Life is out-of-doors now and the pavement gardens are at their best with their owners to be found enjoying a drink outside their doors after work.

  Cafés and restaurants are also serving outside, often by the water's edge. Everyone seems to have a boat; the Amstel River and the canals are a chuggin' and a sloshin' and the living really is easy.

  Autumn Gold

  Blessed with an abundance and variety of trees, Amsterdam summer passes mellowly (if we're lucky) into Amsterdam autumn.

  The canals, lined with elm and lime for the most part, become paths of yellow and gold. The streets and squares planted with plane trees, poplar, catalpa, gingko, cypress, tulip tree, Caucasian wingnut continue this colourful display.

  You'll see things in winter that you may never even notice in summer.

  Winter walks in Amsterdam are very rewarding and invigorated by a cheek-reddening jaunt, you'll enjoy that drink like never before.
